How to care for your jewelry this summer
You take care of your jewelry all year long, but summer poses some extra challenges when trying to maintain your jewelry and keep it looking its best. Sand, chlorine, gardening and suntan lotion all wear down your jewelry and take the sparkle out of your diamonds and gems. If you follow our tips to keep your jewelry safe and clean, and visit your jeweler for regular check ups, your jewelry will sparkle through the summer.
Tip 1. No chlorine or salt water! Remove all jewelry before going into a hot tub or swimming pool or salt water. Chlorine or salt water can damage and discolor metals such as gold and platinum and can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones.
Tip 2. Don't wear jewelry when applying sunscreen, lotions, and when in the shower. These products cause a film to form on your jewelry, making it appear dull and dingy.
Tip 3. Don't wear your jewelry when gardening. Soil contains silica which acts as an abrasive which will wear down your metal. Plus, who wants soil under their diamonds. If you can't remove your jewelry, please wear gloves to protect your rings and bracelets.
Tip 4. Clean jewelry regularly. Use a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth to wipe jewelry after wearing to remove any summer lotions. Better yet, use our jewelry cleaner with a soft brush to remove build-up under the gems. This will enhance the jewelry’s luster and will ensure that it is clean before storage.
Tip 5. Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case, or in a box with compartments and dividers to prevent pieces from scratching each other. Your coin purse is not a safe place to keep your jewelry.
Tip 6. After the summer season, take your jewelry to Judith Ansteth Jewelers for a
